UPDATE: See the complete Q&A and a surprise in our wrap-up post of Hozier’s First AMA.
We’ve been asked to explain what this means and how people can participate. So here goes!
What is Reddit?
Reddit is an online community that was founded 11 years ago this week (June 23, 2005 to be exact!) According to Wikipedia:
As of 2016, Reddit had 542 million monthly visitors (234 million unique users), ranking #11 most visited web-site in US and #25 in the world.
- The community is a forum and it is structured around different topics, also known as subreddits. People in this community can be very passionate about their favourite topics.
- Each post can have threaded replies and discussions nested within.
- On Reddit users can upvote discussions and individual comments. With many people doing this, the effect is to raise the thread to the top of the list, giving more visibility to the discussion.
- Yes, there is a Hozier subreddit. But don’t limit yourself there. You can find people talking about Hozier in different subreddits throughout the site by using the search function.
- There are community behaviour guidelines called reddiquette.
- To post to Reddit, you’ll need to sign up for a free account. You don’t need to register to read posts.
- You can access the site through your web browser or through their Android and iPhone apps.
What is an AMA?
AMA stands for Ask Me Anything and is a question and answer interview session. Notable people & celebrities have been using Reddit AMAs to connect with people for years.
- The subreddit IAmA is where the conversation threads and other useful information can be found.
- The most popular person to host an AMA was President Obama during the 2012 election campaign. The increased traffic brought down parts of the site. Commander Chris Hadfield hosted an AMA from the International Space Station.
- What is truly unique about Reddit AMAs is that the community is known for asking a combination of silly and thought-provoking questions.
- This is a comprehensive article for those wanting to know even more about Reddit AMAs. There’s also The Atlantic’s “AMA: How a weird Internet thing became a mainstream delight.”
Hozier’s AMA
Typically, the link for a celebrity AMA will not appear in the IAmA subreddit until about 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Reddit advises those hosting an AMA to wait until then so their thread doesn’t get buried under newer posts.
Login to your account on Friday, June 24 around 5:45 pm Eastern Time and head over to https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA. If you don’t see the link to Hozier’s AMA, check the new tab at the top of the page. The AMA link should appear before 6 pm.
Hozier’s Guitars will also tweet the link to the discussion as soon as it becomes available.
Asking a Question
Once you’ve got the link, you can click through into the discussion and ask your question.
- Try to ask questions that haven’t already been posted.
- It’s better to upvote someone else who may have posted before you than to post a duplicate question.
- Questions that are upvoted tend to get answered more often because they demonstrate popularity and stay higher on the list .
See you on Reddit!
