In A Week: May 8 to 14, 2016

In A Week is our look back at Hozier highlights and happenings from the previous week.

News

Hozier spent some time in Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios this week.

Was an absolute joy being in @abbeyroadstudios recently refurbished Studio 2 this week…

Studio Two at Abbey Road is where The Beatles recorded with George Martin, as well as Pink Floyd, Shirley Bassey, Oasis, Adele, Tony Bennett & Amy Winehouse, and a very long list of artists. It is a significantly important recording studio that has been called “the birthplace of modern music.”

Recently Google & Abbey Road produced an award-winning interactive project  to explore the inside of the famous studios. In Studio Two check out the special effects cupboard, echo chamber, heavy curtains, movable walls, worn floors, incredible pianos, analog recording equipment and more.

Hozier Explained

Alright, it’s not really a new section but we had to include this in our wrap up somewhere.

This line from the song Run had Catherine Johns asking Hozier what he meant.

Like how she twisted the bog man
After she married him

How nice that Hozier responded:

The lyric’s inspiration comes from a Seamus Heaney poem called The Grauballe Man.

Chart News

Take Me To Church was certified 6x Platinum in Italy this past week (over 300,000 in digital/physical sales).

Appearances

Broken Hallelujahs is a fascinating piece that analyses Hozier’s Take Me To Church  and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah in relation to Pope Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body and King Solomon’s Song of Songs.

And while we’re in that line of thought….

RTÉ Replayed Hozier’s interview with Gay Byrne for The Meaning of Life on May 8. The 25-minute interview originally aired on September 27, 2015. It is available on the RTÉ player until June 7. (Viewers outside of the UK and Ireland can watch it on the RTÉ international player by paid subscription.)

Here are two highlights from the interview:

Life

Like millions around the world, Hozier watched the Semi-Finals of the Eurovision Song Contest. Representing Ireland this year was Nicky Byrne who, in addition to singing, is also a broadcaster with RTÉ and introduced Hozier at last year’s Xmas Ball.

Hozier’s Tweet about Polish contender Michał Szpak became a Eurovision moment.

(Later in the Finals, Poland ended up with the 3rd highest number of public votes equal to 222 points, moving them briefly from last place to 6th place.)

Alana Henderson had all the winged creatures flocking to her this week while continuing to write and record at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. The baby bat adventure had a great outcome.

Mia Fitzgerald left Los Angeles to return to Ireland. But before she left she took in Harry Potter World at Universal Studios.

Hot Press and The Thin Air both featured BARQ in their issues this week. They’ve been working hard promoting their single Gentle Kind of Lies and are set to play Whelan’s on May 29th to launch their second single, That Thing You Love. Watch for them in our Festival Friends post coming later this week.

Jarlath Henderson

Jarlath’s album Hearts Broken, Heads Turned received a long list nomination for Scottish Album of the Year (he resides in Glasgow). Voting for the short list begins June 13th. The SAY awards will start streaming the nominees’ albums, one per weekday for 24 hours with a recap of the 5 over the weekend, beginning May 16th. More information here.

  1. As always, thank U so great to be kept informed! So pleased that TMTC is 6 times platinum in Italy. Love that Andrews fellow Irish artists are included – lovely! Waiting, patiently in anticipation for new music 💚

  2. This HG weekly bulletin to me is like when I was little -waiting each week with baited breath for my weekly comic to pop through the door. I couldn’t wait for the next issue then and I can’t wait for the next issue of “In a Week” now!!
