In A Fortnight: June 5 to 18, 2016

In A Fortnight and In A Week bring you the Hozier highlights and happenings you may have missed in the week or two just passed.

News

The big news this past week was that Hozier dropped a new song on the world. Better Love was written specifically for the upcoming The Legend of Tarzan film.

Hozier had 3 weeks to conceive, write, demo, and record the song. Along with Alex Ryan and Rory Doyle, the song came to life in Dublin and in London with an orchestra in Abbey Road Studio Two.

We have loads of background, quotes, production information, and all the download links in our post on the Better Love release:

Band Projects

Hozier’s not the only one working on new projects:

Alana Henderson celebrated an incredible 5 million Spotify streams of Song About A Song by releasing a video for it. The Thin Air hosted its premiere.

Lorraine Barnes has finished a music video! We look forward to hearing what new music she’s created.

While in New York at the beginning of June, Hozier stopped by Columbia Records and signed the blackboard with their Chalk Cam.

Life

Orlando Reactions

The shooting of Voice finalist Christina Grimmie at an after show meet and greet in Orlando was shocking, with Rachael and Mia each voicing their sadness and condolences.

The next day, the largest mass shooting in modern US history took place at the Pulse nightclub, a gathering place for the LGBTQ community in Orlando.

Hozier made time in NYC for some great music from the amazing blues artist Gary Clark Jr.  This is the second time Hozier has seen Gary Clark Jr. after the two of them had back-to-back sets at the North Sea Jazz Festival in July 2015.

Alana Henderson was remembering market finds in Madrid.

Alex Ryan took to tinkering and played his Darkness on the Edge of Town theme on piano.

Mia Fitzgerald took some time to relax on the water, making us all wish were there.

Rachael Lampa has been exploring the Oregon coast and posting gorgeous landscapes on her Instagram.

Prince Tributes

Whelan’s held an I Heart Prince tribute concert benefiting the Dublin Simon Community on June 6, 2016.  The cracking line-up was backed by a stellar house band including Stephen McHale, Neil Dorrington, and Tommy Gray from BARQ.

Caoimhe Barry from Wyvern Lingo did a fantastic rendition of I Wanna Be Your Lover. She was joined by the rest of Wyvern Lingo for When Doves Cry. And the fabulous trio of Roisin O, Jess Kav, and Caoimhe Barry sang Little Red Corvette.

A second Prince tribute concert, organized by Dublin musician CC BREZ and Rory Doyle is planned for July 21 to benefit the Irish Cancer Society. They’ve assembled an outstanding line-up including Wyvern Lingo, members of Bell X1 and The Walls, plus additional special guests TBA.  Stay tuned for further updates with possible viewing or donating opportunities for international fans. More information here.

Little Green Cars

Another tidbit from their American tour has been released. This time a video interview with A Music Blog, Yeah? from their stop in Toronto. The band also had a nice write-up in the Irish News.

Adam O’Regan (guitars, piano, vocals) went behind the camera again for the third time on the latest video from Little Green Cars, Clair de Lune, which was released on June 15. Adam also created the videos for The Song They Play Every Night and Easier Day.

Wyvern Lingo

The band was featured in the Sunday Times Culture Magazine.  Wyvern Lingo stopped by for an in-studio session at Today FM and they posted more photos from the Louise Duffy Show on their Facebook page. We love the nickname “The Bray Triplets” that she gave them. They also posted a new video for their live Lamplight Session performance of Letter to Willow which is now available on Spotify.

Wyvern Lingo organized a pop-up gig at the Harbour Bar on June 15 with Saint Sister, Queeva (another Hozier tour alumna) and Brona. Read the full story of the fundraising gig here.

Saint Sister

Saint Sister got a mention from Hozier with lyrics from their song Corpses.

Recently, Gemma and Morgan did a session in-studio on Today FM on June 8th followed by another session June 12 to promote Body and Soul. They were interviewed in The Gloss Magazine about their early days with Hozier and Alex Ryan in Trinity Orchestra and about opening for Wil Butler from Arcade Fire.

The duo announced more dates for the UK and Ireland, including a coveted spot at the Glastonbury Festival and a supporting gig for Soak on July 8 in Derry. They also received another glowing review, this time from their appearance at Vantastival. Saint Sister also played the pop-up gig at the Harbour Bar in Bray with Wyvern Lingo.

Zaska

Zaska was included in The Last Mix Tape’s 20 acts to see at the Body & Soul Festival. They had two appearances at the festival. This followed Zaska’s amazing headlining set at Down With Jazz last week.  Check out the gorgeous photos from Down With Jazz.

BARQ

Hot Press released a fabulous set of photos with BARQ and @BeKreativ that we could not resist turning into a GIF.

The band were busy playing Carlow Arts Festival with a closing day gig at Body and Soul and there’s an appearance at Interlude Fest on the horizon.

Jarlath Henderson

Hearts Broken, Heads Turned landed at #31 in The Guardian’s top rated albums of 2016 rankings, in the company of James Blake and Radiohead. The album also got a great review from FRUK. Voting for Scottish Album of the Year has concluded. The results are pending.

Romes

Romes, who recently hit 1 million Spotify streams on their debut EP Believe and were named Buzz.ie’s Tune of the Day for June 6, played shows in New York and Los Angeles last week. They declared an Irish high school reunion when old pals Hozier and Flavia met up with them in LA at their gig. (What do they put in the water in that school to produce such talent?!)
